古英語 nēahgebūrhād の合成語。nēah（近い）+ gebūr（住人）+ -hād（状態）で「近くに住む人々の状態」が原義。関連語は neighbor（隣人）、nearby（近くの）。近隣住民の共同体という意味から、その地域自体を指すようになった。
Neighborhood comes from Old English parts meaning "near," "dweller," and a suffix meaning "state" or "condition."
