この語は自分に災いをもたらす宿敵や手ごわい敵対者を指します。ギリシャ神話の復讐の女神ネメシスに由来し、傲慢な者に報いをもたらす存在として知られています。転じて、誰かを常に苦しめる宿命的な相手や、破滅を招く存在を意味することもあります。
A nemesis is a person or thing that causes someone serious trouble or defeat, especially again and again. It can mean a main enemy, but it is also often used more generally for a difficult problem someone cannot escape.

nemesis はギリシャ語 Nemesis に由来し、語根 nem- は『分け与える』、-sis は動作を表します。economy や astronomy の -nomy も同系で、本来は『当然の取り分を配る力』だからこそ、転じて逃れられない報いや宿敵を指すようになりました。
Nemesis comes from Greek Nemesis, linked to a root meaning "to give out" or "to allot." In Greek thought, Nemesis was the power that gave people what was due to them, especially as justice or punishment. That is why the word later came to mean an unavoidable punishment, and then also a powerful rival or enemy.
