Newfoundland is an English place name formed from new, found, and land, with the sense “newly found land.” Early European explorers and mapmakers used related expressions for territory encountered across the North Atlantic around the end of the fifteenth century. The name became established for the island off Canada’s Atlantic coast. Although John Cabot’s 1497 voyage is closely associated with its early English history, the naming developed through several early forms and records.
