nodule はフランス語 nodule を経て、ラテン語 nodulus（小さな結び目）にさかのぼる。node や nodular と同根で、語幹 nod- は「結び目・こぶ」を表す。だから「小さく丸い結節」という意味がそのまま見えてくる。
