金属の精錬で出る不純物のかす。転じて、価値のないくだらないもの。
Dross means worthless material, waste, or things of very low quality. It can refer to physical rubbish, but it is also often used in a figurative way for poor ideas, writing, or products.

dross は古英語 dros「金属精錬で出る浮きかす」にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語で、もとは溶けた金属から弾き出される不要物でした。近縁の dregs やドイツ語 Drusen も同系で、価値あるものを取り出した後の残り物という感覚が、そのまま「くず・くだらないもの」へ広がりました。
Dross comes from an Old English word for the waste that rises from metal during melting and refining. It belongs to an old Germanic word family for unwanted remains or scum. Because it named what was thrown away after the valuable part was taken out, it later came to mean anything worthless or inferior; dregs is similar in idea.
