impeachable は impeach＋-able。impeach は古フランス語 empechier を経て、ラテン語 impedicare「足かせをはめる」にさかのぼり、ped-「足」を含む。impede も同根で、「動きを縛る」感覚が、公職者を法的に追及できる意味へつながった。
Impeachable comes from impeach plus the suffix -able. Impeach came into English through Old French from Latin impedicare, meaning "to fetter" or "catch the feet," from ped- meaning "foot." The idea moved from physically holding someone back to legally charging or calling an official to account; compare impede, which shares the same root.
