小説家
解説 Definition
小説を創作する作家のことを指します。物語を通じて人間の感情や経験を表現する芸術家です。
A novelist is a writer who creates novels, which are long fictional stories. The word is mainly used when talking about someone's profession or creative work. It usually refers to a person known for writing books of fiction.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
novel を知っていれば、novel + -ist「〜する人」で「小説を書く人」と組み立てて覚えられます。artist, scientist などの -ist と同じ型です。writer はもっと広く「書く人」全般、author も本の著者全般ですが、novelist は fiction、特に長めの物語を書く人に絞られるのがポイント。a famous novelist, become a novelist, read a novelist’s works のような場面と一緒に覚えると定着しやすいです。
If you know `novel`, add `-ist`, the same ending as in `artist` or `scientist`, and you get a person connected with novels. This makes it more specific than `writer`, which is broader. Remember it with phrases like `famous novelist` or `become a novelist`.

novelist の語源・成り立ち Etymology
novelist は novel「小説」に -ist「〜する人」が付いた語です。novel はイタリア語 novella を経てラテン語 novus「新しい」にさかのぼり、もとは「新しい話」の感覚なので、novice や innovate と同じく『新しさ』の語根を共有します。
"Novelist" is made from "novel" plus the ending -ist, meaning a person connected with something. "Novel" came through Italian novella and goes back to Latin novus, meaning "new." The early sense was of a new or fresh story, and from that it came to mean the kind of writer we know today; related words include "novice" and "innovate."
