novelist は novel「小説」に -ist「〜する人」が付いた語です。novel はイタリア語 novella を経てラテン語 novus「新しい」にさかのぼり、もとは「新しい話」の感覚なので、novice や innovate と同じく『新しさ』の語根を共有します。
"Novelist" is made from "novel" plus the ending -ist, meaning a person connected with something. "Novel" came through Italian novella and goes back to Latin novus, meaning "new."
