tally の語源・成り立ち Etymology
tally は英仏語系の taillie「刻み目入りの棒」から来て、動詞の核は taillier「切る・刻む」です。昔は棒に切れ目を入れて数を記録したため、「刻む」がそのまま「数える・集計する」になりました。tailor や retail も遠い同根です。
Tally came from Anglo-French taillie, meaning a stick marked with cuts for keeping a record, from taillier "to cut." In the past, people counted by cutting marks into wood, so the idea of "cutting" became the idea of "counting" or "keeping score." Over time, the word came to mean the final count itself.
