Ohioはイロコイ語族セネカ族の言葉「ohi:yo'」（大きな川）に由来し、オハイオ川の名前から州名になった。同じくネイティブアメリカン語源の地名にMississippi（大きな川）やChicago（野生のニンニク）がある。川の壮大さがそのまま地名になった例である。
