予定された時刻にぴったり合っている状態。遅刻も早着もしていないこと。
On time means happening at the planned or correct time, without being late. It is often used for arrivals, departures, meetings, homework, and work schedules. It does not mean early; it means at the expected time.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
on は「ぴったり接している」感覚なので、on time は予定時刻の点にちょうど乗っているイメージで覚えるとよいです。train arrived on time, be on time for school のように、約束・授業・列車など決まった時刻にきちんと合う場面でよく使います。似た in time は「遅れず間に合って」で、締切直前でも可。on time はあくまで定刻どおり、という違いをセットで押さえると混同しにくくなります。
Think of `on` as touching an exact point. `On time` means you arrive exactly on the planned time point, not late and not really off schedule. Compare it with `in time`, which only means early enough before it is too late.

on は古英語 on「…の上に・接して」、time は古英語 tima「時・適切な時」です。on time は「決められた時点にぴたり乗っている」感覚から「時間通りに」。timely や timetable にも、時をきちんと区切る発想が見えます。
This phrase combines on and time, both from Old English. Time came from tima, which could mean both "time" and "proper time," while on kept its basic sense of being in contact with something. So on time originally suggested being exactly on the expected moment, which became the modern idea of punctuality.
