外野手がいやしゅ

解説 Definition

野球やクリケットで外野の守備を担当する選手たち。

Outfielders are baseball players who stand in the outer part of the field, away from the batter and bases. Their job is to catch or stop balls hit into that area. The word is used mainly in baseball and softball.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

`outfielder` は `out` + `field` + `-er` で、「外のフィールドを守る人」と分解すると覚えやすいです。まず `field` を「守備位置のあるグラウンド」、`out` を「外側」と押さえると、`infielder`(内野手)との対比で定着します。試合では打球を追って深い位置を守る場面を思い浮かべるとよく、`left/right/center outfielder` の形でも見かけます。今回は `-s` が付いているので「外野手たち」という複数形だと確認すると混乱しません。

Split it into `out` + `field` + `-er`: a person in the outer part of the field. It becomes even easier if you pair it with `infielder`, the player on the inside. The `-s` just tells you it is plural: more than one outfielder.

例文

The outfielders sprinted to catch the fly ball before it hit the ground.

外野手たちはボールが地面に落ちる前にキャッチしようと全力疾走した。

outfielders の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 ūt(外へ)+ feld(野原)+ -er(人を表す接尾辞)の複数形。fieldは独Feldと同根で「平らな土地」が原義。infielder(内野手)と対をなす。19世紀アメリカで野球用語として定着し、守備位置が外側の野原であることからこう呼ばれた。

Outfielders is the plural of outfielder, built from out, field, and the person suffix -er. Field comes from Old English feld, originally meaning open or flat land, and it is related to German Feld. In baseball, the word developed for players stationed in the outer part of the field, in contrast with infielders.
