目覚まし時計や予定の時刻に起きられず、寝過ごしてしまったこと。「oversleep」の過去形。
Overslept means slept longer than planned and woke up too late. It is usually used when someone misses the usual waking time and may be late for school, work, or another appointment.

sleep が「眠る」だと分かれば、over が付いた oversleep は「眠りが行きすぎる」→予定を越えて寝てしまう、と覚えやすい。特に overslept は『寝坊した』という失敗の報告で、I overslept and missed the train. のように遅刻・乗り遅れと結びつきやすい。単に slept は『眠った』、sleepy は『眠い』なので、over が付くと“必要以上に”のニュアンスが加わる点をセットで押さえると定着する。

overslept は oversleep の過去形で、over-「行きすぎて」＋ sleep「眠る」から成る。sleep は古英語 slǣpan に由来し、語全体で「必要以上に眠る」、つまり予定を越えて眠ってしまい『寝坊した』になる。関連語は sleepy, sleepless。
