Overviews are short general descriptions of something, rather than detailed explanations. They are commonly used in presentations, reports, lessons, and introductions to give the main points quickly.

overviews の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 ofer（上に）＋古フランス語 veue（見ること、ラテン語 videre＝見る）の複合語で「上から見渡すこと」が原義。全体を俯瞰して要点をまとめた「概要」の意になった。同根語に review（再び見る→批評）や preview（前もって見る→予告）がある。
Overviews comes from over- and view, with the basic sense of "seeing from above." View entered English through Old French from Latin videre, "to see." From the idea of looking at something as a whole from a high position, it came to mean a general summary. Related words include review and preview.
