Connect the name Pacific with the idea of peace. The adjective pacific historically means peaceful or calming, and the ocean received its European name after Magellan’s expedition encountered relatively calm waters. For the ocean, capitalize the word and usually use the article: the Pacific or the Pacific Ocean. Learn it in geographical combinations such as Pacific islands, the Pacific coast, sail across the Pacific, and countries around the Pacific. This capitalization separates the proper geographical name from the uncommon lowercase adjective meaning peaceful.

pacific の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 pācificus(平和をもたらす)に由来し、pāx(平和)+ facere(作る)の合成語。探検家マゼランが嵐の大西洋を抜けた後、穏やかなこの海を「平和の海」と名付けた。関連語: pacifism(平和主義)、peace(平和)。
Pacific comes from Latin pacificus, meaning “peace-making” or “peaceful,” formed from pax, “peace,” and facere, “to make.” The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan named the ocean Mar Pacífico, or “peaceful sea,” after experiencing calm conditions there during his expedition. English adopted Pacific as the ocean’s proper name. Words such as pacify and pacifism preserve the same historical association with peace.
