州や国の境界の中で、他の地域より細長く突き出した区域を指す地理用語です。他の地域と接していたり、周囲を別の地域に囲まれていたりすることが多く、地図上でひときわ細く伸びた形になります。よく知られた例としてはフロリダやテキサスの突出部が挙げられます。
A panhandle is a long, narrow piece of land that sticks out from a larger area. It is often used in geography to describe the shape of part of a state or country.

pan と handle という超基本語の組み合わせとして見ると覚えやすい。地図で州や国の輪郭を見たとき、本体から細く伸びた部分を『取っ手みたいな所』として視覚で結びつける。Florida panhandle など、地域名の後ろに置かれて州境・国境の説明で出やすい。peninsula は海に突き出す『半島』だが、panhandle は水に囲まれている必要はなく、行政区画の境界が細長く張り出した部分をいう、と対比すると混同しにくい。

panhandle は pan「鍋」+ handle「取っ手」の複合語で、どちらも古英語にさかのぼる日常語です。原義は文字どおり「フライパンの取っ手」なので、地図や物の輪郭で細く突き出た部分をそう呼ぶのは形のたとえだと分かります。hand, handle も同系です。
Panhandle is a compound of pan and handle, both old everyday English words. It first meant the handle of a frying pan in the most literal sense. Because some narrow pieces of land or objects look like that shape, the word was later used for a long, thin part sticking out from a wider body. Handle is related to hand.
