enclaveはフランス語経由で、後期ラテン語inclavare「鍵で閉じ込める」に由来し、in-「中に」＋clavis「鍵」に分かれます。つまり「鍵をかけて囲い込まれた土地」という発想から、周囲を他国に囲まれた飛び地の意味になりました。関連語はenclose、conclave。
