conclave は、限られた人だけが参加し、非公開で重要事項を協議する秘密の会合を指す。特にカトリック教会で教皇選出のために枢機卿が開く会議を意味することでよく知られるが、比喩的に閉鎖的な重要会議にも使われる。

conclave は、open な conference ではなく、close された会議だと対比で覚えるとよい。conference が一般的な会議なら、conclave は参加者がごく限られ、外に開かれない重い会合。ニュースでは papal conclave（教皇選出会議）が定番。単なる discussion や summit よりも「密室で重要事項を決める」響きが強いので、秘密性と選ばれた参加者をセットで記憶する。
Remember it by contrast: a `conference` can be open and public, but a `conclave` feels closed and limited. It suggests an important private meeting with only selected people inside. `Papal conclave` is a strong example to keep in mind.

conclave はラテン語 conclave『鍵のかかった部屋』からで、con-『共に』＋clavis『鍵』に分けられます。clavicle や clavier も同じ clavis 系で、『鍵で閉じる場所』が転じて、外から隔てて行う秘密会議や教皇選挙を指すようになりました。
Conclave comes from Latin conclave, which meant "a locked room." It is built from con- "together" and clavis "key." From the idea of people shut in together behind a locked door, the word came to mean a private or secret meeting, especially the meeting to choose a pope.
