frying
揚げる
解説 Definition
揚げるとは、油を使って食材を調理する方法を形容する言葉である。高温の油に食材を入れて加熱することで、外側をカリッとさせながら内側に火を通す調理法を指す。
Frying describes food, equipment, heat, or another element associated with cooking in hot fat or oil. As the -ing form of fry, it can also refer to the action or process of cooking food this way, whether in shallow or deep oil.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
frying は fry に -ing を付けた形で、語末の y はそのまま残す。frying chicken では「揚げている鶏肉・揚げ物用の鶏肉」のように後続名詞を修飾し、frying food では動名詞として「食材を揚げること」になる。高温の油で表面を香ばしくする場面を核に覚える。
Connect frying directly with fry plus -ing; the final y remains unchanged. Keep one kitchen scene in mind: food cooking in hot oil while its outside becomes brown or crisp. Before a noun, frying can describe something involved in that process, as in frying oil or the smell of frying chicken. It can also function as a gerund naming the activity, as in Frying food at the correct temperature matters. Do not automatically equate it with deep-frying: ordinary frying may use only a shallow layer of oil in a pan.

frying の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語frire(揚げる)を経てラテン語frīgere(炒る・焼く)に由来。印欧祖語*bʰer-(熱を加える)が語根。同根語にfritter(揚げ物)やfry(揚げる)がある。「熱で調理する」が原義。
Frying is formed in modern English from fry and the suffix -ing. Fry entered Middle English through Old French frire, from Latin frīgere, meaning “to roast or fry.” The English verb came to denote cooking food in hot fat or oil. Related forms such as fried and fryer were subsequently built from the same verb, while fritter is historically connected through French culinary vocabulary.
