文字記録が残る以前の時代を指す形容詞で、歴史以前の生活や文化に関係するさまざまな事柄を表します。旧石器時代・新石器時代・青銅器時代などの考古学的な時代区分や、その時代に使われた道具や技術を示すことが多いです。初期人類の文化・遺物や恐竜などの絶滅した古代生物について言及する際にも用いられます。
Prehistoric describes the time before people began to write things down. It is often used for ancient humans, animals, tools, and events from that period. The word is common in history, archaeology, and science.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
pre- は preview, predict などでおなじみの「前」。history / historic を知っていれば、prehistoric はそのまま「歴史の前」と組み立てて覚えられます。historic が「歴史上重要な」、historical が「歴史に関する」なのに対し、prehistoric はさらに前の、文字記録がない時代の話。prehistoric animals, prehistoric cave paintings のように、恐竜や洞窟壁画の場面と結びつけると定着しやすいです。
Use the prefix `pre-`, which means "before," as in `preview` or `predict`. Then add `historic`, and you get the idea of something from before recorded history. It sticks well if you picture `prehistoric animals` or `prehistoric cave paintings`.

prehistoric はラテン語系の接頭辞 pre-「前」と、ギリシャ語 historia 由来の historic から成る。history や historian と同根で、「歴史として記録される前」という組み立てが、そのまま「先史時代の」を表す。
Prehistoric is made from pre-, meaning "before," and historic, which comes from the same Greek source as history. The Greek root historia meant "inquiry" or "knowledge gained by investigation."
