antediluvian はラテン語 ante「前」+ diluvium「大洪水」から成り、文字通りは「ノアの洪水以前の」です。そこから「洪水より前ほど昔だ」という誇張で「古代の」の意味になり、antecedent や deluge も同じ要素を含みます。
