unlearning は古英語 leornian「学ぶ」由来の learn に、否定・逆転の un- と -ing が付いた形です。learner や learned と同根で、『学びを消す』より『いったん解いて学び直す』感覚が語形に表れます。
Unlearning comes from un- plus learning, from the verb learn. Learn goes back to Old English leornian, meaning "to acquire knowledge."
