解説 Definition
物理学や経済学で使われる専門的な「非弾性」。衝突後に運動エネルギーが保存されない、または価格が変わっても需要量が大きく動かないなど、外部からの変化に対する反応の小ささを表します。
Inelastic means not able to stretch, bend, or change very much. It is often used in science and economics, such as for materials that do not expand easily or demand that stays almost the same even when prices change.

technical な inelastic は、単に素材が伸びないというより「変化を受けても反応が限定的」という抽象的な性質を指します。physics なら inelastic collision で、衝突後に跳ね返りが完全でなくエネルギーが失われる場面。economics なら inelastic demand で、必需品のように価格が上がっても買う量があまり減らない需要です。物理的な弾性の概念が、反応の鈍さへ比喩的に広がった語として覚えると整理できます。
Start with `elastic`, which means able to stretch or bounce back, then add `in-` for the opposite. The core image is weak reaction or weak return after pressure or change. That is why you see it in both `inelastic demand` in economics and `inelastic collision` in physics.

inelastic の語源・成り立ち Etymology
in-「否定」＋ elastic「弾む・元に戻る」から成り、elastic はギリシャ語 elastos「しなやかな」にさかのぼります。elasticity と同根で、「戻る力がない」がそのまま「非弾性の、融通のきかない」の意味につながります。
"Inelastic" combines in- meaning "not" with elastic. "Elastic" comes through Greek elastos, meaning something flexible or able to spring back. So the basic idea is "not able to return," which later also gave the wider sense of being rigid or not adaptable.
