attache はフランス語 attaché「付属の人」に由来し、動詞 attacher「取り付ける」から出ました。attach や detach も同根で、大使館に「付属した」補佐官を指した語が、その人のかばんを意味する attaché case へ広がりました。
Attache comes from French attaché, literally meaning someone "attached" to a person or office. It comes from the verb attacher, "to attach," which is the same source as English attach and detach. In English it first referred to a junior official attached to an embassy, and later the word was used in attaché case for the case carried by such a person.
