悲観主義
解説 Definition
悲観主義は、物事の悪い側面に焦点を当て、将来に対して否定的な見方をする傾向です。この哲学的立場は、世界の本質的な悪さを信じており、最悪の結果を予想する特徴があります。
Pessimism is the belief or attitude that bad things are likely to happen, or that situations will not improve. It is commonly used for a generally negative way of thinking or a negative view of the future. It is the opposite of optimism.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず反対語の optimism とセットで覚えると定着しやすい語です。optimism が「うまくいく方を見る姿勢」なら、pessimism は「悪い展開を先に見積もる姿勢」。語尾の -ism は Buddhism などと同じで「主義・考え方」を表すので、pessimism は一時的な気分ではなく物の見方そのものだと押さえるとよいです。pessimist（悲観主義者）、pessimistic（悲観的な）も同じ核を持つ語族としてまとめて覚えると、文章中でも見分けやすくなります。
