Phenylalanine is an amino acid that the body uses to build proteins and make other important substances. It is found in many foods and is discussed in nutrition and medical contexts. People with a condition called PKU must control how much of it they take in.

長いですが、ひとかたまりで覚えず `phenyl + alanine` に分けるとかなり楽です。`alanine` は基本のアミノ酸名、そこに `phenyl-` が付いた「アラニン系の少し専門的な仲間」と見ると記憶しやすいです。栄養・生化学では `essential amino acid` の文脈で出やすく、`protein` `supplement` `amino acid` と一緒に現れがち。略号 `Phe` もセットで覚えると定着します。似た長い化学語でも `phenol` とは別物で、こちらは体内で使われる必須アミノ酸、と使用場面ごと分けて覚えると混乱しにくいです。

phenylalanine は化学語の複合で、phenyl「フェニル基」+ alanine「アラニン」から成ります。phenyl はフランス語経由でギリシャ語系 phain-「現れる」に連なり、alanine は aldehyde 由来なので、phenol・alanine と並べると「フェニル基の付いたアラニン」だと納得できます。
"Phenylalanine" is a modern scientific compound word built from "phenyl" and "alanine." "Phenyl" is related to "phenol," a chemistry term whose name goes back through French to Greek roots, while "alanine" was named from "aldehyde."
