相手の気持ちやその場の空気への配慮が足りず、無神経で気の利かない様子を表す形容詞。発言や振る舞いが率直すぎたり不適切だったりして、人を傷つけたり不快にさせたりする場合に使われる。社交的な場面で問題になりやすい語。
Tactless means not showing enough care or sensitivity in what you say or do. A tactless person may offend others by being too direct, rude, or careless without meaning to. It is commonly used in social and professional situations.

tactlessはtact「機転」+ -less「ない」から成り、tact自体はラテン語tactus「触れること」に由来します。もとは「触覚」なので、相手にどう触れればよいかの感覚が欠ける人、という比喩から「無神経な」になった語です。tactileやcontactも同じ語根です。
