Harmonisation is the process of making different things more consistent, compatible, or balanced with each other. It is often used in areas such as law, policy, business, or music, depending on the context.

まず基礎の harmony「調和」を芯に置くと覚えやすいです。harmonise は「調和させる・足並みをそろえる」、-ation が付いて harmonisation で「そろえていくこと」という名詞になります。音楽の和音の調和より、法律・規則・基準・制度を共通ルールに合わせる場面でよく出ます。standardisation に近いですが、単なる標準化より「違うもの同士を一致させる」感触が強め。EU rules, tax systems などを harmonisation する文脈で結ぶと定着します。なお英式つづりで、米式は harmonization です。

harmonisation はギリシャ語 harmonia「つなぎ合わせ・調和」がラテン語・フランス語を経て入り、harmony に -ise と -ation が重なった形です。もとは「ばらばらのものを合わせる」感覚で、harmonic や harmonious も同じ語根から広がりました。
Harmonisation comes from Greek harmonia, which originally meant a joining or fitting together, then passed through Latin and French into English. It was formed from harmony with the suffixes -ise and -ation. The sense developed from "bringing parts together" to the broader idea of making things agree; harmonic and harmonious share the same root.
