Alignment means a state in which things are arranged in the correct line, position, or relationship. It can describe physical order, such as the position of parts, or agreement between goals, ideas, or actions. The word is common in design, engineering, and teamwork contexts.

align を知っていれば覚えやすい語。まず line を思い出し、「一直線にそろえる」が align、その“そろった状態・そろえること”が alignment。-ment は development や improvement と同じく「結果・状態」を作る名詞語尾。物の整列だけでなく、business alignment, team alignment のように「方針・利害・認識がそろっている」の意味でも頻出。単なる agreement より、実際に向きや配置までかみ合っている感じがある。

align に名詞化の -ment が付いた語で、align はフランス語 aligner、さらにラテン語 linea「線」に由来する。関連語は line, linear。もとは『同じ線にそろえること』なので、物の整列にも意見や方針の連携にも使われるようになった。
Alignment comes from align plus the noun ending -ment. Align came through French from Latin linea, meaning "line." The original idea was putting things into the same line.
