Misaligned means not arranged in the correct position, line, or direction. It can describe physical objects, such as parts that do not match properly, or more abstract things, such as goals or opinions that do not fit together. The word is common in technical and general contexts.

align「一直線にそろえる」を知っていれば、mis- が付いて「正しくそろっていない」と取れる。aligned が「整って一致している」側で、misaligned はその逆。物なら The wheels are misaligned.、抽象なら our goals are misaligned. のように、位置だけでなく方針や利害のずれにも使う。misplaced が「置き場所違い」なのに対し、misaligned は「向き・並び・かみ合わせのずれ」と覚えると混同しにくい。
Start from `align`, which means line up correctly. Add `mis-`, a common prefix for "wrong" or "badly," and you get `misaligned` = not lined up right. This works for both physical things like wheels and abstract things like goals.

misaligned は mis-「悪く・誤って」+ align「一直線に並べる」+ -ed で、align は古フランス語を経てラテン語 linea「線」に由来します。つまり「同じ線にうまく乗っていない」が原義で、「ずれている」という意味が腑に落ちます。関連語は line, linear。
Misaligned is made from mis-, meaning "wrongly," and aligned, from align. Align came through Old French and ultimately from Latin linea, meaning "line," which is also the source of line and linear. The original idea is "not placed on the same line," which naturally grew into the wider sense of being out of proper position or agreement.
