Harmonization is the process of making different things work well together or become more similar. It is often used for rules, systems, standards, or musical parts that need to match in a balanced way. In formal contexts, it often suggests reducing differences to create consistency.

harmonization は harmony＋-ize＋-ation。harmony は古フランス語 harmonie を経てギリシャ語 harmonia「つなぎ合わせ・調和」に由来し、語根には「結びつける」感覚がある。関連語は harmonize, harmonic で、「別々のものをうまくつなぐ」から調和の意味になる。
Harmonization comes from harmony, plus the endings -ize and -ation. Harmony came into English through Old French from Greek harmonia, which originally meant a joining or fitting together.
