Paralleling means happening, developing, or moving in a similar way or at the same time as something else. It can also mean running alongside something, such as a road following a river. It is common in writing about trends, events, and physical position.

parallel はギリシャ語 parallelos に由来し、para-「並んで」+ allelon「互いに」が土台。paralleling は「互いに並んだまま進む」が動詞化した形で、allele や allelopathy の allel- にも「互い」の感覚が残る。
Paralleling comes from the verb parallel, based on Greek parallelos. That Greek word is made from para- "beside" and allelon "one another," so the original image is of things running side by side. From that, English developed the verb meaning to go alongside or match in a similar way. The idea of allelon also appears in words like allele.
