遺伝学において、同じ遺伝子座に位置する異なる遺伝子の形式のことです。DNA上の同じ位置に2つの異なる形態の遺伝情報が存在する場合を指します。

allele はドイツ語 Allel から英語に入り、さらに allelomorph にさかのぼります。これはギリシャ語 allēlōn「互いに」＋ morphē「形」に由来し、“互いに対応する別の形”が「対立遺伝子」になりました。関連語に morphology があります。
"Allele" entered English from German "Allel" and goes back to the scientific term "allelomorph." That term was built from Greek "allēlōn," meaning "of each other," and "morphē," meaning "form"; "morphology" is from the same root. The idea was of matching alternative forms, which later became the genetic sense of different forms of the same gene.
