parallelism は parallel + -ism で、parallel はギリシャ語 parallelos「並んだ」に由来し、para-「横に」+ allelon「互いに」から成ります。『横に並ぶこと』と見ると、並行や対句法の意味が腑に落ち、parallelogram も同じ発想です。
Parallelism comes from parallel plus the suffix -ism. Parallel goes back to Greek parallelos, from para- "beside" and allelon "one another," so the core idea is things lying side by side. From that, English developed senses of matching lines, similar structure, or balanced form. A related word is parallelogram.
