対辺が平行で等しい四角形。四つの内角の合計は360度であり、隣同士の角の和は180度である。
A parallelogram is a flat shape with four sides, in which each pair of opposite sides is parallel. The opposite sides are also equal in length. It is a basic word in geometry and mathematics.

parallel が分かればかなり覚えやすい語です。parallelogram はまず『parallel な辺をもつ四角形』としてつかむとよいです。rectangle や square と違って直角は不要で、長方形を横にずらして傾けた形を思い浮かべると定着しやすくなります。向かい合う2組の辺が平行なら parallelogram。台形のように1組だけ平行な図形とは区別して覚えるのがコツです。語尾の -gram は diagram などと同じく『図・形として見えるもの』の仲間と意識すると切り分けやすいです。

parallelogram はギリシャ語 parallelogrammon に由来し、para「並んで」+ allelon「互いに」+ gramma「線で書かれたもの」から成ります。つまり「向かい合う線が互いに並んだ図形」というのが原義で、そこから平行四辺形の意味になりました。関連語は parallel, diagram です。
