Covariant describes things that change in a related or corresponding way. It is mainly used in mathematics, statistics, and physics, where it refers to quantities or forms that vary together or transform according to the same system.

まず `vary`「変わる」や `variable`「変数」を思い出すと、`variant` は「変わる側のもの」とつながります。そこに `co-`「一緒に」が付くので、covariant は「何かに合わせて一緒に変わる」と押さえるとよいです。数学では座標変換で成分が“同じ向きのルールで”動くイメージ。対で出やすい `contravariant` は contra- で「逆向き」なので、まずこの対比で整理すると混同しにくくなります。`invariant`「変わらない」との区別もセットで覚えると定着します。
