ampersand は記号 & を、子どもが alphabet の末尾で and per se and（「それ自体で and」）と唱えた言い方が縮まった語。& 自体はラテン語 et「そして」の合字なので、「and を表す印」がそのまま語名になった。関連語は et cetera、etc.。
