解説 Definition
海面近くにある岩・砂・サンゴなどでできた浅い礁を指す語。船の航行の妨げになる危険な暗礁を表すこともあれば、魚やサンゴが集まる生態系としての礁を表すこともあり、必ずしもサンゴ礁に限らない。地理・海洋・航海の文脈でよく使われる。

まず coral reef（サンゴ礁）という形で覚えると定着しやすいです。reef 単独でも「海面近くで船に危ない、浅く盛り上がった岩礁・礁」という核を持つ語で、beach（浜辺）や coast（海岸線）のように陸側は指しません。ニュースや説明では barrier reef, reef fish のように他語と組み合わされやすく、「魚が集まる場所である一方、船には危険」という二面性を一緒に持つと記憶に残ります。

reef の語源・成り立ち Etymology
reef は古ノルド語 rif や中世オランダ語 rif にさかのぼり、もとは「肋骨・細長い隆起」を表した語と考えられます。海中で背のように長く盛り上がる地形のイメージから「岩礁・サンゴ礁」になりました。関連語は rib。
Reef goes back to Old Norse rif and Middle Dutch rif, words that meant something like a rib or a narrow raised ridge. The image was of a long, hard line standing up like a rib. That is how it came to mean a rocky or coral ridge in the sea. It is related to English rib.
