英語 atoll はポルトガル語 atol を経て、モルディブのディベヒ語 atoḷu に由来します。もともと島々のまとまりや輪状の地形を指す語が、海に輪を描く環礁の意味で定着したので、形そのものが語源に残っていると分かります。
Atoll came into English through Portuguese atol. It ultimately comes from Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives, from atoḷu, a word for a group of islands or a ring-shaped reef formation. The meaning narrowed in English to the circular coral island shape, so the original idea of a ring remains in the word's history.
