胸部を保護する骨。脊椎の両側に12対存在する骨格構造。肺と心臓を保護する重要な機能を持っています。
A rib is one of the curved bones in the chest that protect the heart and lungs. The word can also refer to a long, thin supporting part in objects such as umbrellas, leaves, or fabric. In food, ribs are also pieces of meat from this part of an animal.

rib の語源・成り立ち Etymology
rib は古英語 ribb「肋骨」に由来する古いゲルマン系の語で、胸を囲う細長い骨を指しました。大事な器官を守る“骨のわく”という感覚があるため、船や傘の骨組みを rib と呼ぶのも同じ発想です。関連語は ribbed, ribcage です。
Rib comes from Old English ribb, a very old Germanic word for the bones around the chest. Its basic meaning stayed the same for the body.
