podcasting は現代英語の造語で、iPod の pod と broadcast の cast に動名詞 -ing が付く。broadcast は本来「広くまく」が原義で、音声を広く配信する感覚がそのまま入る。webcast も近い仲間で、媒体だけが違う。
Podcasting is a modern English word formed from pod, made famous by iPod, and casting from broadcast, with the ending -ing. Broadcast originally meant scattering seeds widely before it was used for sending radio or TV content to many people. The newer word kept that idea of wide distribution, but applied it to digital audio; webcast is built in a similar way.
