polyvinyl はギリシャ語 poly-『多い』と、ラテン語 vinum『ワイン』由来の vinyl から成り、『多数のビニル基をもつ』が原義です。polymer や polyethylene と同じ poly- が見えるので、小さな単位が大量につながる素材だと腑に落ちます。
Polyvinyl is built from poly- "many," from Greek, and vinyl, a chemical term ultimately linked to Latin vinum "wine." Vinyl first referred to a substance associated with ethyl compounds discovered in alcohol chemistry. Polyvinyl therefore meant "having many vinyl units," and came to be used for materials made from repeated vinyl groups. Related words include polymer and polyethylene.
