スペイン語 patata から英語に入った語で、元はカリブ海のタイノ語 batata（サツマイモ）に由来する。スペイン人が南米からヨーロッパに持ち帰った際、アンデス原産のジャガイモにもこの名が転用された。食物の伝播とともに言葉も大陸を渡った好例である。
English potato was borrowed from Spanish patata. That Spanish form developed through contact between batata, a Caribbean Taíno word used for the sweet potato, and papa, the Quechua name for the Andean potato.
