Premed describes studies, courses, or students preparing to enter medical school, especially in the U.S. college system. It is commonly used in education when talking about the stage before formal medical training.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
pre- は「前」、med は medical / medicine の省略と見ると覚えやすいです。つまり premed は「medical school の前段階」で、米国大学の医学部志望者向けの課程や学生を指します。prepaid, preview, prelaw などと同じく、pre- に「本番の前の準備」という感覚があると定着しやすい語です。doctor や medical student そのものではなく、その前の段階だと押さえるのがコツ。premed student の形でよく出ます。

「premed」は pre-「前もって」と medical の略 med からできた語で、さらに medical はラテン語 medicus「医師の」にさかのぼります。med- は「治す」感覚を持ち、medicine や remedy と同根なので、「医学へ進む前提の課程」とわかります。
Premed is a shortened form of pre-medical, built from pre- "before" and med from medical. Medical goes back to Latin medicus, meaning "of a physician," from a root connected with healing. So the word originally meant work done before full medical training, and it shares its root with medicine and remedy.
