professor（教授）の口語的短縮形。ラテン語profiteri（公に宣言する）に由来し、pro-（前に）＋fateri（認める・告白する）の構成。学問を「公に教え説く者」が原義。同根語にprofess（公言する）やconfess（告白する）がある。
