Prog is an informal shortened name for progressive rock, a style of rock associated with extended compositions, structural complexity, unusual rhythms, conceptual themes, and influences from genres such as classical music and jazz. It can also refer more broadly to related progressive music.

使い方 Usage

  • 音楽ジャンルとしては listen to prog「プログレを聴く」のように使います。prog album や prog band のように名詞の前にも置けます。 Use listen to prog when referring to the genre. Prog also appears before nouns, as in prog album and prog band.
  • 長い曲や複雑な拍子などは代表的な傾向で、すべてのプログレ作品が全特徴を備えるわけではありません。 Long compositions and complex rhythms are typical tendencies; not every prog recording has every characteristic.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

progressive の最初の prog を残した形と覚えましょう。日本語の「プログレ」と結び付け、長い曲や複雑な拍子を連想すると記憶に残ります。

prog の語源・成り立ち Etymology

prog は progressive rock の短縮形。progressive はラテン語 pro-「前へ」+gradi「歩く」に由来し、既存のロックを先へ進める音という感覚がある。関連語は progress, gradual。

Prog is a modern informal clipping of progressive, especially in progressive rock. Progressive ultimately comes from Latin progressus, related to progredi, “to go forward,” which combines pro-, “forward,” with gradi, “to step or walk.” The musical label progressive rock arose for rock that expanded established forms and techniques. Shortening the genre name to prog produced convenient expressions such as prog band, prog album, and prog scene.
