progeria はギリシャ語 pro-『早く・前に』+ geras『老年』に由来し、『老いが先に来る』という形そのままの語です。geriatrics や gerontology と同じ ger-『老い』を含むと分かれば、早老症という意味が語形からそのまま読めます。
