Beneficiation is the process of improving raw ore or mineral material so that it is more useful or valuable. It is mainly used in mining and industry. This usually involves removing unwanted material and increasing the amount of the desired mineral.

beneficiation は beneficiate + -ion で、語源は後期ラテン語 beneficium「利益・恩恵」です。bene-「よく」+ facere 系なので、「鉱石を役立つ状態にする」と考えると腑に落ち、benefit や beneficiary も同根です。
Beneficiation was formed from beneficiate plus the noun ending -ion. Its deeper source is Late Latin beneficium, meaning "benefit" or "favor," from bene "well" and a root related to facere "to do, make."
