Etymology

English puna was borrowed through Spanish from Quechua puna, a word referring to high-altitude land or the high Andean region. It became established in geographical and ecological writing for the cold, relatively dry plateaus and grasslands of the central Andes, especially at elevations above roughly 3,500 meters. The term retains a close connection to its original South American landscape and climate.
