pyramid はピラミッド、つまり四角形などの底面から頂点へ向かって面が集まる形の建造物や立体を指します。日本語の「ピラミッド」とほぼ同じ意味で、古代エジプトの墓としてのピラミッドにも、同じ形をした物にも使います。

pyramid はギリシャ語 pyramis をラテン語が受け継いだ語で、英語へ入りました。語源は未詳ですが、先の細い小麦菓子の名と結びつけられ、底が広く頂点へすぼむ形そのものを指す語になりました。関連語は pyramidal、pyramidion。
