quadrature はラテン語 quadratus「四角にした」に由来し、quattuor「四」にさかのぼる。quadrant や quadrilateral と同じ語根を持つ。図形を正方形と等しい面積に直す発想が、求積法という意味につながった。
Quadrature comes from Latin quadratus, meaning "made square," which goes back to quattuor, "four." It belongs to the same word family as quadrant and quadrilateral. The word first referred to making something square, and from that it came to mean finding a square equal in area to another figure. That is how it developed its mathematical sense.
